Navidad - Cristina Serra Masramon
Ya ha pasado Halloween y ahora se acerca la Navidad. Os voy a hablar de una tradición que tiene lugar en Navidad en mi región, el País Vasco. En Navidad, los niños vascos no reciben los regalos de Papá Noel, sino de Olentzero, que es “la versión vasca de Papá Noel”. Olentzero es un carbonero que vive en las montañas vascas. A principios de diciembre, los niños escriben cartas al Olentzero para pedir regalos y después echan las cartas al buzón.
El 24 de diciembre, Nochebuena, hay una cabalgata en todas las ciudades y pueblos del País Vasco. El Olentzero está en ella y saluda a los niños, que esperan sus regalos con ilusión.
El 24 por la Noche, mientras que los niños duermen, Olentzero baja a los pueblos y las ciudades vascas a dar regalos a los niños buenos y carbón (dulce) a los niños malos. Al día siguiente,los niños vascos se despiertan y abren sus regalos.
Cuando era pequeña, en mi casa celebrábamos más el Olentzero que los Reyes Magos (las otras personas que traen regalos en Navidad en España) por una cuestión práctica: el Olentzero venía los primeros días de Navidad, traía juguetes y podía jugar con ellos todas las vacaciones. En cambio, los Reyes venían el último día de Navidad (el 6 de enero) y solo me regalaban cosas para la escuela porque al día siguiente tenía que empezar las clases de nuevo.
Halloween is already over and Christmas is almost here. I am going to explain you a tradition that takes place in my region, the Basque Country. In Christmas, the Basque children do not receive the presents from Santa Claus or Father Christmas, but from Olentzero, which is ‘Santa Claus’s Basque version’. Olentzero is a coal seller that lives in the Basque mountains. At beginning of December, children write letters to Olentzero asking him presents. Then, the letters are put in a mailbox.
On 24th December, Christmas Eve, there is a parade in every town and village in the Basque Country. Olentzero is there and greets the children, who wait for the presents with illusion.
The night of the 24th, while the children are sleeping, Olentzero goes to every Basque towns and cities to bring presents to the good children and (sweet) coal to the bad children. Next day, the Basque children wake up and open their presents.
When I was a kid, me and my family celebrated more Olentzero than Three Wise Men (the other people that bring presents for Christmas in Spain) for a practical reason: Olentzero ccame the first days in Christmas, he brought me toys and I could play with them during the whole holidays. On the other hand, the Three Wise Men came the last day of Christmas (6th January) and they only brought me things for the school because the next day I needed to go back to school.
